The successful candidate will lead the planning, execution, and verification of complex LTO tape data migrations while maintaining zero-to-minimal production downtime and ensuring full data integrity.Key Responsibilities
- Design and execute end-to-end migration strategies for Ultrium LTO tape libraries, drives, and media (LTO-5 through current generations).
- Manage large-scale data migrations (multi-petabyte environments) including media inventory, robotic library reconfiguration, tape copy/refresh, and host-based migrations.
- Develop detailed migration plans, risk assessments, rollback procedures, and cutover schedules aligned with production SLAs.
- Perform pre- and post-migration validation, including data integrity checks, performance testing, and compliance reporting.
- Collaborate with client infrastructure, backup, and operations teams as well as hardware vendors (IBM, HPE, Quantum, Spectra Logic, etc.).
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to LTO drives, media errors, library robotics, SAN fabric, and backup software integration.
- Document all migration activities, lessons learned, and as-built configurations for client handover.
- Minimum 7+ years of hands-on experience in enterprise storage environments, with at least 4 years specifically focused on Ultrium LTO tape migrations in large-scale production settings.
- Demonstrated success leading multiple full-scale LTO tape library migrations (not just refreshes or small-scale copies).
- Deep technical knowledge of Ultrium LTO technology, including drive compatibility, media management, encryption (LTO-4+), WORM, and partitioning.
- Proficiency with leading tape libraries and automation (IBM TS4500/TS3500, HPE MSL, Quantum Scalar, Spectra Black Pearl, etc.).
- Experience integrating LTO platforms with major backup/restore solutions (IBM Spectrum Protect, Veritas NetBackup, Commvault, Veeam, etc.).
- Strong understanding of SAN/NAS fabrics, zoning, multipathing, and host connectivity (AIX, Linux, Windows).
- Proven project-management skills with the ability to deliver under tight timelines and strict change-control processes.
- Current certifications (IBM Storage, SNIA, or vendor-specific LTO credentials).
- Experience with tape-to-disk, tape-to-cloud, or LTO generational upgrades in regulated industries (finance, healthcare, government).
- Familiarity with automation scripting (Python, PowerShell, Ansible) for migration tasks.
